ARLINGTON, Texas Cooper Rush is uncertain if Sunday’s 25-10 victory against the Washington Commanders was his last start as the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback. Neither does Jerry Jones.

All they are aware of is that if it is Rush’s final start, he has left the Cowboys in a better position than when he took over for an injured Dak Prescott three weeks ago.

“I’m really proud of what he’s done for this team,” said Jerry Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, after their third straight victory. “He’s given us a chance to compete for the playoffs, and I couldn’t be more pleased with his performance.”

Prescott is eyeing a return next week against the Los Angeles Rams, but the Cowboys (3-1) want to make sure that Prescott is as close to 100% healthy as possible before he returns and could push back his return until Week 6 against the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Coach Mike McCarthy said that Prescott still had some swelling in his right thumb that needed to subside before he could step up his throwing.

Prescott had the stitch removed from his thumb on Monday, but Jones said that there was no update on his status.

When asked about whether or not he thought what the other player was doing could be classified as “throwing,” Jones said, “I don’t really know that I would call it that.

He’s got movement, for sure. But I couldn’t say for certain if his grip and everything is effective enough to be considered a normal, good passing throw.”

Rush became the first quarterback in Cowboys history to win the first four starts of his career, and the first in the NFL since Kyle Allen won five straight for the Carolina Panthers over two seasons (2018-19). “It’s been fun,” Rush said. “Trying to enjoy it. The NFL doesn’t let you enjoy it much. You got to go week in and week out and play.

The 4-0 is just, I mean, I guess I would say the defense and all the breaks you catch, it’s just kind of lucky. QB win stats, they are what they are. It’s a team game.”

On Sunday, Rush completed 15 out of 27 passes for 223 yards and two touchdown passes. He’s only been sacked twice in his three starts, and he hasn’t had a single pass intercepted.

When asked about the quarterback situation, Jones said that he would love to have a quarterback dilemma because it would mean that Rush has won games in Prescott’s absence.

However, Prescott will return to his starting role when he is healthy. Now, it’s just a matter of when that will be.

“You just enjoy playing ball,” Rush said. “It’s not always easy being a backup, but you just want to do your job when you’re in there.

You cherish the moments when you’re out on the field with your teammates because you know how lucky you are to be a part of such a great team. There’s a great sense of camaraderie in the locker room and it’s just a lot of fun.”
